I enjoy making felt crafts with my kids and their friends. This DIY recycled cardboard heart covered with colorful felt scraps is a quick and easy cardboard craft. The handmade felt heart is a lovely gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and other occasions. It’s an excellent kids’ craft for preschoolers. But older kids can also have lots of fun with it.
Happy felt crafting with kids!
I always keep all the felt scraps from my felt patterns and felt banners hoping to use them one day. This felt heart craft is a lovely way to use up at least some of them :) I hope to release more of these felt scraps crafts to use even more of my felt scraps. This cardboard heart project is suitable for kids aged three years and up. Kids spend up to 1 hour creating their cardboard heart.
I haven’t shown the technique of how to glue the felt scraps to my kids (4 and 7 years old). I took the approach of here you have the cardboard heart; here are the felt pieces; here is the glue. Go ahead and create! You will see that the kids choose different colors and positions for the felt pieces. Some kids might even make some ornaments with felt scraps within the cardboard heart. It is all unique and beautiful. I make sure to let them know that no matter how the heart is decorated, it is marvelous and, most importantly, theirs!
Materials for Cardboard Heart with Felt Scraps
Felt scraps
Glue (for kids felt craft, I used Elmer’s Craft Bond Fabric and Paper Glue, UHU Craft Glue)
Scissors (my favorite ones are KAI 5 1/2 inch embroidery scissors or KAI 6 1/3 inch patchwork scissor)
A flat piece of Corrugated Cardboard (I keep the cardboard from furniture deliveries)
Sharp scissors for the cardboard or Exacto knife with Cutting board (Rotary cutting board for crafts); if you craft with cardboard the Exacto knife and the cutting board are excellent
How to Make Felt Cardboard Heart
Print the recycled cardboard heart template (from Materials above). Trace it onto the cardboard, cut it out with scissors, or use an Exacto knife and cutting board.
2. Cut pieces of felt scraps into rectangles and squares of approximate length 1 inch (2,5 cm). Older kids can cut the felt scraps themselves.
3. Gather the kids and let them create the recycled cardboard heart covered with felt scraps. Let it to their fantasy and creativity.
TIP: Leave the glue in an easy-to-access place as a lid or a plate. I gave my kids cotton buds for the glue.
How much love we share with these Easy Felt Cardboard Hearts with your kids? This easy cardboard craft looks awesome and makes for a lovely handmade gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a teacher, or Valentine’s Day! Enjoy the felt crafting time :)
