How to Make Felt Coasters

To make felt coasters, you will need a few basic supplies such as felt, a pair of sharp scissors, an embroidery needle, thread, and a rotary cutter (not a must, but if you have one, use it). For coasters, I recommend using wool felt if your budget allows it. It's water resistant and, at the same time, water absorbent. The only downside is cleaning. It's not recommended to wash wool felt in the washing machine; dry cleaning is better. If you plan to use the coaster one-time off for a special party, then you can use craft felt. I have a separate post explaining different types of felt for you to learn more.

  • The shape of the coaster could be a circle, hexagon, octagon or square, depending on your personal preference. The coaster should be approximately 4" to 4 1/2" (10 to 11.5 cm) in diameter.

  • You can choose a felt color combination to match your home or party decor. You can also mix and match different colors to create a unique and personalized set of coasters.

  • After you have chosen your colors, carefully cut out the shapes from the felt using the scissors or rotary cutter (great for straight lines). Are you curious about what scissors to use for felt? Learn the secrets of the best scissors for cutting perfect felt shapes in Felt cutting made easy.

  • The bottom layer of the coaster can be made of felt, burlap paper, cardboard, corkboard, or matte board.

  • Then, layer the pieces together and secure them with glue or by stitching around the edges. Not all glue works on felt, therefore it's important to have the right glue for felt fabric (hot glue being one, fanric glue not necessarily).

  • With the right materials and a little bit of creativity, you can easily make your own set of felt coasters that are both functional and stylish for any occasion.

DIY Felt Coaster Tutorials

1. Patchwork Felt Coasters

The first tutorial in the DIY coasters selection is Boho-styled patchwork felt coasters. These coasters are sewn with simple running stitch. You can make them using your felt fabric scraps. It's always good to have projects for felt scraps, right? They're great for your cup of tea, coffee or as lovely handmade gifts.

2. Felt Strawberry Coasters

This strawberry coaster craft project is easy to make and is no-sew. They'll be excellent for summer parties. The back of the coaster is made with burlap paper or cardboard.

3. Letter Felt Coasters

If you follow the tutorial, you can make alphabet coasters with letters. You can use dies to cut the letters or make your alphabet template. If you prefer, you can sew the coasters all by hand. Each family member can have his or her favorite color coaster. This is a quick sew project. I shared an alphabet template in my felt stocking pattern, which you can download when subscribing to the FunClothCrafts newsletter.

4. Felt Flower Coaster

Molly and Mama patterns are always cute, and these felt flower coasters aren't different. They're made from fabric and felt, but you can also use colored felt only. They're going to be great gifts.

6. 4 Aquatic Coasters with Laser File

I'm in love with these four aquatic coasters. I like their neat, clean look. If you don't have a laser cutter machine, you can use your Cricut. In my post, I teach you how to cut felt with the Cricut machine.

7. Nautical Felt Anchor Coasters

This felt anchor coaster isn't a typical pattern from Molly and Mama, at least colors considering, but it's adorable. You cut the different felt pieces and then stitch them together with the running stitch and blanket stitch.

8. Hexagon Felt Pom-Pom Coasters

This coaster is different as it's made from felt balls. You cut a hexagon using the coaster template, and then glue felt pom-poms onto the shape. This is a simple craft project.
