I love Gingerbread house! It brings me memories of Christmas time at my home, where my mum, sister, and I would bake and decorate the gingerbread house. At that time, I wasn't such a big fan of gingerbread, but I enjoyed making the house and decorating it with sweets. So when I was thinking about the DIY Christmas craft for this year, the choice was obvious - DIY Gingerbread House. This post teaches you how to make a Gingerbread House Felt Christmas Ornament, a Gingerbread House Felt Board, and Gingerbread House Christmas Kids' Craft.

Happy Holiday Crafting!

2. Quick Gingerbread House Kids Craft

  1. Download and print the free Gingerbread House Kids Craft template. Cut the Felt gingerbread house from felt (altogether 2 felt pieces - one for the house part and one for the snow on the roof). You'll need scraps of colorful felt to cut the decoration pieces. You can follow the template for the decoration pieces or let your kid cut felt shapes freehand.

TIP:  Learn 6 different ways of cutting felt in my How to cut felt post.

2. Following the template, glue snow onto the roof of the gingerbread house. If you prefer to hang your kids craft, glue ribbon between the snow felt shape and the house felt shape.

TIP: Learn which glue works best on felt in How to glue felt.

3. Let your kid decorate the gingerbread house. Glue the cut felt decoration pieces into the gingerbread house. For kids, I recommend using tacky glue (bear in my you need to wait 24 hours for the glue to dry completely).

I left my son (age 5) to place the shapes on the gingerbread house as he liked. Then I helped him glue the pieces.

4. The gingerbread house kids' craft is quick to make and looks lovely! You can also use two sides of the house (front and back) and make an ornament for a Christmas tree. Another beautiful option is to create a Christmas banner with gingerbread houses made by your kid.

3. Gingerbread House Ornament

  1. Download and print the free Gingerbread House Ornament template. Cut the Felt gingerbread house shapes from felt (altogether 4 felt pieces - two house parts and two snow shapes). You'll also need to cut decoration shapes (door, windows, hearts, wreath, etc.). Prepare a Fiber Fill, pins, needle, and embroidery floss.

2. Embroider the felt house shapes. Here is an example of embroidery.

  • Attach the bottom edge of the snow with the whip stitch. I used one strand of embroidery floss.

  • Add the wreath to the purple door with French knots. I used three strands of embroidery floss.

  • The door is stitched with a blanket stitch. Here I used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • Straight stitches are stitches on the door's handle. Here I used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • As for the windows, embroider straight stitches and connect the center crosses with a tiny stitch. Here I also used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • Apply running stitch for the candies. In my gingerbread house, it’s sewed with one-strand embroidery floss.

  • For the center round window, embroider blanket stitch - always join the stitches in the center. This one has three strands of embroidery floss.

3. Embroider the felt house shapes. Here is the second example of embroidery.

  • Attach the bottom edge of the snow with whip stitch. I used one-strand embroidery floss.

  • Add the candy to the purple door with running stitch. I used one strand of embroidery floss.

  • The door is stitched with blanket stitch. Here I used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • The heart on the door's handle is embroidered with running stitch. Here I used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • As for the windows, embroider straight stitches and connect the center crosses with a tiny stitch. Here I also used two strands of embroidery floss.

  • I wanted to show different embroidery styles for the hearts. Apply French knots to the left heart. Embroider running stitch for the middle heart. For the right heart, make straight stitches and tiny stitches to connect the cross points of the straight stitches. All the hearts have two strands of embroidery floss.

  • For the center round window with an opening, embroider straight stitches. The stitches start at the shape's bottom edge and finish close to the upper edge. It makes a nice effect if they aren't the same length. Here, two strands of embroidery floss are used.

4. Now, it's time to join the house shapes. Start with a blanket stitch for the snow on the roof. Place the ribbon in the center. You can glue the ribbon ends to the reverse side of one house to secure it in place. Make sure that the blanket stitch goes through the ribbon to hold it. Then continue with the brown edge of the house (using blanket stitch). This will leave an opening for the filling, where the door is placed. Use two strands of embroidery floss.
