How to Make Felt Toys

Learn how to make felt toys with these beginner-friendly felt craft tips. Buy felt sheets in your favorite colors and gather basic supplies such as a pair of sharp scissors for felt, an embroidery thread, and a needle. Search in this post for your favorite free felt sewing patterns, or get creative and make your own felt designs. Start by cutting out your chosen felt shape from the felt sheet and then use hand-sewing techniques to stitch it together. A simple running stitch is perfect for beginners, but feel free to experiment with different sewing felt techniques.

Add some personality to your felt craft by incorporating handmade felt details like embroidered eyes or a stitched smile. These small touches can really bring your felt play toy to life. Whether you're making a sewing project for yourself or as a gift, sewing with felt is a fun and rewarding way to express your creativity.

Tips for DIY Felt Toys

  • The first step is to choose the pattern for a felt toy you would like to make - choose simple patterns that use running stitch when you are a beginner. With more experience, you can move to more complicated patterns using whip stitch or blanket stitch and embroidery.

  • Next, gather your supplies - I would recommend choosing wool felt or wool blend felt for felt toys. You can learn more about different types of felt in this practical guide to felt fabric. The guide includes online stores where you can buy felt. You'll also need a sharp pair of scissors. I use KAI 5 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors or Fiskars Stitcher Scissors (No. 5) for small shapes. You might want to have longer shears for larger felt pieces. The last two supplies are embroidery needle and thread or polyester threads and standard needle. Polyester thread is stronger and more reliable.

  • After you've chosen your colors, carefully cut out the shapes from the felt sheet using scissors. You might want to use tape or freezer paper for the perfect cut.

  • Continue sewing the pieces together using the given stitches (running stitch or whip stitch will be the most common ones).

  • In the next step, fill your felt toy with stuffing. You can use polyester fiberfill or wool roving (not washable). Stuffing might also be a great way to use felt scraps. You need to cut them into small pieces and fill the toy. It's not as soft, though. I've also used worn-out pillow inserts.

  • In the final step, finish sewing your felt toy.
