Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt
TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. You get to know what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.
TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the puppet’s body. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew (I managed to do it this time, and it gets really difficult to get the needle through the dry glue :(.
Felt pieces can also be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched. I use this option less and less now, I prefer to either hold the pieces in my fingers or use glue.

Felt scraps (find great felt at Benzie Design or find more buying options in the Types of Felt section of How to Sew Felt blog post): felt colors based on your choice (amber, pink, light pink in two tones, black, white) if you want to follow my colors)
Embroidery thread: matching colors to the darker tone of felt, black, white
Small or embroidery scissors (KAI 5 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors are the ones I use)
A glue that works on felt (optional - Beacon Fabri-Tac glue works well)
How to Make Felt Butterfly Finger Puppet Craft
Making a felt butterfly finger puppet craft is a perfect spring craft activity. You will need to print the butterfly template to start. Once you have your template, follow the steps below to create your felt butterfly finger puppet.
Use the free butterfly finger puppet template to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. Visit the section above to learn how to download the free felt pattern.
Hold with a finger, pin or glue the white circles for eyes to the front of the butterfly’s body shape, following the butterfly template. With one-strand white floss, sew a whip stitch around the edges of the eyes to attach it. I do 8 stitches.
Using the French knot, embroider the eye pupils with three strands of black embroidery thread. I wrapped the thread around my needle thrice to make the knot more significant.
Tip: You could use self-adhesive googly eyes instead of sewing the eyes. I would only opt for this option if older kids use the finger puppet.
Embroider the mouse with backstitch.
Tip: Draw the template on tracing paper and embroider the design over the paper. Once it's finished, gently remove the tracing paper. You can read more in 4 Ways on how to trace on felt for embroidery.
Tip: You can also draw the mouth with a pencil following the template.
Sew the butterfly’s wings. Firstly, attach the larger circles with whip stitch. Then, sew the French knot to attach the smaller circles. Continue sewing the French knots. Repeat the steps for the other wing. Finally, sew the wings together with running stitch.
Attach wings to burtterfly’s body. Sew running stitch to attach the wings to the back body piece. Help yourself with the template to find the right position. Make sure the position is correct from both sides. I needed to redo mine as the wings were slightly tilted.
I prefer to attach the antennae with glue before sewing the butterfly finger puppet together. This step is optional.
Place the butterfly finger puppet’s front and back together and join the pieces with the running stitch close to the edge.
Tip: For easier sewing, pin the wings together and hold them to one side and then the other when sewing the running stitch.
Step1 - Cut all felt shapes for the butterfly finger puppet
Step 2 - Sew the eyes
Step 3 - Embroider the mouth with backstitch
Step 4 - Embroider the wings and sew them together with running stitch
Step 5 - Using the running stitch, attach wings to finger puppet body
Step 6 - Glue the antennae (optional)
Step 7 - Sew the running stitch close to the edge.
