I often get inspired by drawings of kids in my family to make softie patterns. This one is no exception. The drawing is made by my niece (8 years old). I found the cupcake so cute with its numerous toppings. When I saw the picture, I knew it wouldto be a fun felt cupcake.
General Instructions for DIY Felt Cupcake
This cute felt cupcake is easy to make. It can make for an excellent first sewing project. It’s stitched entirely by hand, using a running stitch. Two-strand embroidery floss is used to embroider the felt cupcake. Knot thread ends on the wrong side of felt.

Tips for Sewing with Felt
TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Use sewing clips to hold the felt pieces in place until they are stitched.
Another option is to place a glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the body. Aleene's Tacky glue is a good glue for felt when working with kids.

felt color sheets (you’ll need seven felt sheets) based on your choice (find great felt at Benzie Design or find more buying options in the Types of Felt section of How to Sew Felt blog post)
embroidery floss: matching colors to the darker tone of felt
fiber fill to fill the softie
small or embroidery scissors (KAI 5 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors are the ones I use)
pencil or an air erasable pen to copy the template to felt
pins (optional - these are my favorites)
How to Make a DIY Felt Cupcake
Cut out felt shapes of felt cupcake
Use the free felt cupcake pattern to cut out all cupcakes’ felt shapes from felt. You can use a pencil or an air erasable pen to trace the pattern. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like an SVG file for the cutting machine.

Sew the cup
Sew the cup to cupcake’s base with a running stitch. Use the template for guidance. You can leave an opening in the upper part as this will be sewn with the next felt shape (topping).
Continue to sew the toppings to the felt cupcake
Sew cherry
With a running stitch, attach the cherry.
Sew the base with running stitch
Hold two cupcake bases together with sewing clips. Sew around with running stitch, leaving an opening for filling.
Fill the felt cupcake with Fiber Fill
Fill the felt cupcake with fiber fill. You can help yourself with a pencil. Fill as much fiber fill as you like. If you don’t have Fiber Fill, you can use small pieces of felt scraps.
Close the opening of felt cupcake
Close the opening with a running stitch.
